HIPAA Compliance

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) ensures consumer medical and health information will remain confidential and accessible only to health care providers. Other health professionals – such as wellness coaches, personal trainers, nutritionists, etc. – who are part of the care team or providing services may access the consumer’s health information only with consumer consent via the HIPAA waiver. This option is available to Wellness Portal members.

The goals of HIPAA are to:

  • • Provide a method for all providers and health plans to send and receive electronic health information.
  • • Prevent incorrect use and disclosure of consumer’s protected health information.

There are three parts of HIPAA that are relevant to health care:

  • • Privacy of individually identifiable health information
  • • Standardization of code and transaction sets
  • • Security of electronic health information
